Good quality sunglasses can reduce your chances of developing serious eye conditions

You already know that UV light from the sun can have harmful effects on your skin. But did you know that it can also cause serious damage to your eyes?

In much the same way as you might have short term (sunburn) and long term (risk of skin cancer) effects of sun exposure to your skin, there are also similar impacts on your eyes. In the short term, you can develop a condition known as photokeratitis. This is a form of sunburn for your eyes, causing redness, irritation and a feeling of grittiness in the eyes. Fortunately it is normally temporary, but can be very painful while it lasts.

In the longer term, continually exposing your eyes to intense sunlight without protection increases your risk of developing conditions like macular degeneration and cataracts. If left untreated, these can both cause significant threats to your vision and eye health, and may even result in blindness.

For that reason it’s really important to ensure that you wear your sunglasses when you’re out and about in the sun – and not just in the summer months or on holiday either! Your sun specs should be good quality and include 100% UVA and UVB protection. Here in practice we have some sleek and fashionable designs available for you to choose from, including ranges by Paul Costello and Janet Reger.
